I will talk about "The cicada's wit". because summer has come.
What do you think "The cicada's wit" is?

1) Doubt
A cicada's lives on the ground for only 1 week after spending 7 years in the ground.
Why a cicada's life on the ground is very short?

2) My inference
I think that they are safe in the ground because they are very weak and on the ground it is easier male and female cicadas to meet. The chance of meeting is increases when there are many cicadas, and enemies cannot eat all of them. So cicada's kind will continue in a long term.
Irony is that cicada's short life mean that cicadas will live forever.
Of course it is cicada's behavior by Mother Nature.

3) The Cicada's growing too much each 17 years.
This year (2004) there were too many cicadas in Colorado, the USA.
Cicadas come from the earth every 17 years. Too many cicadas' is the same as before. If a lot of cicada's come up (out of ground) at the same time their enemies can't eat all of them. Because many cicadas coming in same time do not eat all of them.

4) Another example
(1) The sheep herd
Sheep are weak so protect themselves by staying in a hard. It is same as "Cicada's wit".

(2)Australian Fairy penguin herd
The Fairy penguins in the Phillip Island are very small (About 30cm). So their enemies attack them easily. They land in a group in the dark after sunset.
