hygiene (衛生）
前から hygiene と sanitation （公衆衛生）の違いが気になっていた。
ＮＨＫラジオ『ビジネス英会話』講座のアシスタント、クリス松下さんによると hygieneとは cleanliness（清潔さ）でもあり、keeping
things clean so that you stay healthy 「健康でいるために身の回りを清潔に保つこと」。public hygiene
は｢公衆衛生」となり、sanitation の意味に近いかもしれない。
sanitation （公衆衛生）には「衛生設備」「下水道設備」の意味もある。sanitation worker とは｢ごみ収集清掃作業員」のこと。sanitary
facilities 「衛生施設」は｢トイレ」を指す。
以下、松下さんの説明。 "The main meaning of hygiene is either the science of
how to establish and maintain health, or the condition of practices that
are good for health. Of course, cleanliness is one of the major things
that regular people can do to maintain their health." 「hygiene の主な意味は、いかに健康になり、健康を維持するかを研究する科学であり、健康によい習慣とは何かを説明するものでもある。もちろん、清潔さも
hygiene の意味に含まれており、健康維持のために皆ができることを指す」。
"But cleanliness in not the core meaning of the word hygiene. It's
things that maintain health. So sleep hygiene would be the thing you should
do to sleep well, to have a healty sleep". 「しかし、清潔さは hygiene の中心の意味ではない。hygiene
とは健康維持ということ。だから、sleep hygiene （睡眠衛生）とは、健康的に安眠するための方法のこと」。
まとめると、hygiene は｢健康法」とも言える。
これこそがハイヂーン
