2004 has better M-rated GC softwre -- Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Resident Evil 4, and Killer 7.

I think MGS and RE4 will be well recieved at least.

The thing is GC owners generally favor platform-exclusive content moreso than PS2 or XBox owners it seems.

Plus I just don't see the "crime" genre taking off on the GameCube. Personally I don't think that's bad thing either. I think games ala MGS and RE can sell relatively well, but the GC is still more of a mainstream, family-skewing console, and that's actually probably helping it this holiday season as more casuals are buying their hardware now, as opposed to more of the early adopter nerds.

The ideal "mature" franchise exclusive for the GameCube would be something like James Bond IMO, not GTA. It fits their audience better and is still sophisiticated and cool enough for older players.

Mario Kart did better than I expected, I'm pretty sure it will do just fine in December.

Yeah, considering how being ONLINE is supposed turn great games into killer apps, it's pretty dissapointing for XBox to see PGR2 barely beat Kirby (whose philosophy is Nintendo's "for-all-ages"). But I'm actually kinda glad.

Nintendo is definately right that ONLINE is not mainstream right now. Especially during X-Mas. I worked in a busy retail store, and ONLINE features were an issue at most 10% of the time when it came to console games. While the console on-line base is growing, I'm not sure if that is turning as many console gamers into online junkies as much as it's bringing in PC-Online junkies into console gaming.

Though I agree something like SSBM or Mario Kart can dominate online if they were make it, I'm not sure it would sell much more if they were. While magazines and people in the internet (who obviously can get online) will say that they would sell massive because theycan go ONLINE, the majority of software sales still go to casual gamers/parents/people who won't be gaming on a constant basis...

Just look at SOCOM.... A title made for ONLINE that was selling twice what the online adapter for Sony was selling...

BTW, what happend to KOTOR dominating the holidays... Even with the PC release, I don't think it's going to outsell The Wind Waker like was claimed back when the July numbers came out...

Since the tie ratios of October and November are available, and we know the console sales as of those months, it's possible to extrapolate how many games were sold for each system during November. (Nov total * Nov ratio) - (Oct total * Oct ratio). Due to the non-exactness of each number to begin with, I won't bother giving all digits.

PS2: 10.69 million
Xbox: 3.83 million
GCN: 3.44 million

I'm actually a bit surprised GBA sold only as well as it did. I mean, it's only slightly above last year's numbers, and this year has overall been significantly better for the GBA due to the SP. I guess the $99 SP + game deals weren't a match for the $49 GBA deals from last year.

Another note: at the Yahoo game stocks group, I saw a slightly different set of numbers for the hardware. My guess is it's more accurate, since its GBA number agrees with what I was saying earlier in the thread.
PS2: 849 K
GCN: 754 K
Xbox: 491 K
GBA: 1.323 M

ADDED:
Here's another thing I hadn't noticed before: the percentage of total console shares from each was barely changed from October.

code:
OCT NOV PS2 41.1% 40.5% XBX 24.1% 23.5% GCN 34.8% 36.0%

I think heavy emphasis on XBL is actually hurting sales of some games. NFL Fever and PGR did great at first but there sequels are doing terrible in comparison.

Interesting.. Smith Barney has different estimates. They say PS2 sales were down 34.8% YOY, GameCube were up 77.1% and Xbox were down 1.1%. If that is the case, the numbers would be:

PS2: 859,000 (10k higher than other number)
XBox: 463,000 (28k lower than other number)
GC: 829,000 (85k higher than other number)

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videogamestocksgroup/files/General%20reports/SmithBarney-Nov%20Game%20Data.pdf -- link for percentage's source.

I think also perhaps MS' lineup has been overstated in terms of mainstream appeal. It's obviously not carrying them this holiday season, and I think it's actually probably better to have one, big game rather than several smaller scale ones.

The XBox audience also seems pretty fickle with what they cotton to. While on the internet you see tons of discussion about games like Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crimson Skies, Top Spin Tennis, etc. the fact is these games aren't even selling that well, let alone moving systems.

Halo 2 is a no brainer.

But I'm not so sure that games like Sudeki, BC, Kameo, Conker, True Fantasy Online, and even Ninja Gaiden will sell to the XBox audience as big as some people think they will. I'm not sure if they're as mainstream as people think.

PGR2 sales are actually downright stunning considering the amount of commercials MS has put behind this puppy, I've seen the PGR2 ad at least 10 times the past month. For a game like that released during the "money" mid-November period, being a sequel to a hit original, with a large advertising budget... this is almost unheard of.

Super Mario Sunshine must be inching closer to 2 million in the US.

Not bad for a Mario game which IMO Nintendo basically "phoned in".

So much for the PS2 selling 1 million in November.

Kinda surprised that the GC is doing as well as it is, and that it cut the Xbox's lead back to under 1 million this month. Halo's gotta be nearing 2.5 million in the states, and SSBM is on its way to the 2 million mark...

Shocked at the incredibly low PGR2 sales, and a little surprised that SOCOM II and Rogue Squadron III didn't sell more (RSIII's at 170k for two months... That's not that great).

Anyway, like with all the other NPD charts, I gotta dig up my predictions I made from before the September NPDs were out. In bold is what my estimates were closest to:

quote:
If Nintendo's ad campaigns and $99 Cubes do well:

September:
Xbox: 154,000
GC: 160,000

October:
Xbox: 214,000
GC: 230,000

November:
Xbox: 460,000
GC: 530,000

December:
Xbox: 680,000
GC: 800,000

Total:
Xbox: 1,508,000
GC: 1,720,000

What will probably happen:

September:
Xbox: 154,000
GC: 124,000

October:
Xbox: 214,000
GC: 170,000

November:
Xbox: 460,000
GC: 430,000

December:
Xbox: 700,000
GC: 550,000

Total:
Xbox: 1,528,000
GC: 1,274,000

I do give Nintendo a lot of flak for the GameCube design, however right now I think one thing they did do right is finally paying dividends -- making the machine for the casual consumer from day 1.

XBox and PS2 are very inefficently made pieces of hardware that caused heavy losses upfront for those companies.

That's why MS/Sony are perhaps more reluctant to slash prices this holiday, because they know this is the peak of this generation and don't want to lose any more revune at this point because basically their economic model requires them to make more money in year 3/4/5 of the console life cycle to make up for heavy losses.

So it seems like by efficently designing the GCN and emphasizing low-cost to performance yield, that aspect of the GC has finally paid off for Nintendo, even though ironically the price gap right now between the GC and XBox/PS2 is actually less than where it was circa fall 2001.

The GC has five 1 million sellers, SMS is catching up to TWW. TWW still can break that 1.6 million number (which I predicted way back last year), I think...

SMS probably is a lot higher factoring in the bundle.

The Wind Waker isn't at Player's Choice pricing yet, it will probably see a nice rise in sales when Nintendo places it there (probably by next March or so).

So, wasn't KOTOR supposed to dominate this holiday season

crap-ass Rebel Strike and old-ass GameCube Star Wars games are doing some ownage here...

Rogue Squadron II is from like 2001...

I bet KOTOR would have had a fair chance at a million with the Cube's audience...

No way will it outdo The Wind Waker, I can't believe some predictions that were made back in July...
