米ニューヨークの国連本部で開かれた気候変動サミットで、一際、注目を集めたスウェーデンの環境活動家、グレタ・トゥンベリさん（16歳）の演説の一部を訳してみましょう。トゥンベリさんの肉声が伝わるように訳を工夫してみてください。

This is all wrong. 「こんなこと大間違いです」。これでもいいですが、もう少し女子高生らしい口調はないかと考え、「私がここにいるのって、絶対おかしいでしょう」に変えました。「それって、絶対おかしいでしょう」と女子高生がよく言っているような気がするのですが…。 I shouldn't be up here.「私はここにいるべきではありません」。 I should be back in school, on the other side of the ocean. 「私は海の向こうで、学校に戻っているはずです」。 Yet you all come to us young people for hope. 「でも、皆さんは希望のために私たち若者のところにやって来る」が直訳。「希望のためにやって来る」は「希望を託している」「期待している」という意味だろうと解釈し、「でも、皆さんは誰もかれも、私たち若者に向かって期待しているだなんて言う」に変えました。 「皆さん」は「大人の皆さん」に変えて、トゥンベリさんの主張をわかりやすくしました。 How dare you ! 「よくそんなことが言えますね！」。 How dare you ! はトゥンベリさんのスピーチの中で、話題になったことばです。後ろに！がついているから強い口調を感じます。大阪弁なら「よう言うわ！」がぴったりですが、ここでは標準語で尚且つ、強い口調で訳出したいところ。「よく言えたもんだ！」「よくもまあ言えたもんです！」「よくもまあ、いけしゃあしゃあと！」「どの口が言う！」「もううんざり！」など。 全体に次のようにまとめました。「私がここにいるのって、絶対おかしいでしょう。私は海の向こうでとっくに学校に戻ってないといけないんですよ。それなのに、大人の皆さんは誰もかれも、私たち若者に向かって期待しているだなんて言う。よくもまあ、いけしゃあしゃあと！」。 (2) Entire ecosystems are collapsing.
