Looking the Oceano Pacifico at restaurant on Cartagena beach

Cartagena is a small and hide-away town, 10 minutes drive from port Antonio in Pacific coast. The town is attached on the rocky sharp slope on the Chilean Pacific coast. The beach spreads wide with shallow water. May in southern hemisphere is autumn and it is in off season, no one except local children are on the beach in Saturday afternoon. In mid summer, there should be bustling with many young and old senorita and senor. Resort looking restaurants are along the beach. We entered into one of the restaurant, sat down in the upper floor. Inside of the restaurant looks neat and sanity. Three other tables were occupied with other customers. Inner part of the room made for event floor. A large screen projector was switched off at this time. Instead a small TV set was showing soccer game attracting several workers like men in front. Two rather looks experienced waiters in black suite were serving the customers.

Sopa de Marisco would be the good choice in this fish rich Chilean coast. Spanish speaking driver and English speaking Mr. M, my colleague and myself, three persons in the beach side restaurant, perfect trio, I guess. All of us ordered the same menu, Sopa de Marisco. We look down the shining Oceano Facifico under afternoon sun. A tremendous number of sea birds resting or flying over the sea reflected the fish rich water of this region. Local children were playing cheerfully in the splashing water in long shallow water.

Entrance of the sea-side restaurant

Wahoo!! I never expect so large volume of soup. It was really big volume the contents of the soup. Who call it a soup? Soup is scantly seen below the variety of sea foods put like mountain in the soup base. Clams, Crabs, Fishes, Blue Mussels, etc. were among them. I counted only blue mussel, there were 12 mussels for one portion. It seemed that we can not eat the main dishes at all. This is a soup in this pacific restaurant. After enjoyed the soup, a big fish fry was carried in. We could have managed to eat one portion sharing by three persons. Foods in the restaurant totally satisfied our taste of the day. It was really a lucky chance we had on visiting a small town Cartagena in the Pacific coast. We headed back to Santiago on highway 78 with full satisfaction of delicious foods we enjoyed.

A real large volume of contents of the soup. Remain of after eat for one person’s portion
