A Fancy Pumpkin Market in deep mountain village
Riding on the retired tractor behind the market
One Saturday afternoon, when I was visiting Washington USA on my business
trip, I drove up to British Colombia Canada with my colleague. It is only
approx. 200 km till Canadian border from where I was staying. Crossing
border is not a big thing as we consider in Japan. It is easy as going
to the next town. Passport control is also simple and easy. Showing the
passport and have few routine questions, then you can cross the border
and drive your car on the road in another country, Canada. There was a
small tax free shop and money exchange on border zone. We changed small
amount of US dollars into Canadian dollars to have coffee or hamburger
in Canada.
We entered Osoyoo, Canadian border town, and dropped in Subway facing the
main road to have coffee and some snack. Drink was in self service. It
was small but clean and well organized shop. It was still early to the
noon, and there were only a couple of people in the shop. The coffee machine
is instructed in French and English. We were reminded that Canada was bilingual
country. Canadian money we had changed at border was now working.
After the short break at Osoyo, we further drove up north along the Route
97 looking Lake Osoyo on our right. The turquoise blue water of Lake Osoyo
was still and gentle in early autumn scene. At about mid point along the
Lake Osoyo, there was a road sign indicating the direction to Vancouver.
The sign say 500 km till Vancouver. We turned our way from Route 97 to
Route 3 heading to the west, to Vancouver direction.
All kind of pumpkins are piled up
After an hour drive, we came to the scene like deep in the Swiss Alps,
sharp edged high mountains and deep and wide valley.
A large wood house with bright color flower pots around
got into my eye. It was something very unique than other scenery surrounded.
We parked our car at the car park and we realized it was a pumpkin market in the
midst of deep mountain area. Countless numbers of pumpkins of all kinds were on
display on the shelves and large baskets. If you look carefully the shelves
inside, there are also other flutes can be seen among pumpkins. I bought a
bunch of Muscat grape. Oh, I have to pay in Canadian dollars, I almost forgotten that
I was in Canada. After enjoying being in the pumpkin market, we went down
to the small town in the bottom of the valley. There were also pumpkins
everywhere along the main street. I shall call this small village as a
pumpkin village.
Pumpkins are everywhere in town
