「単独の、唯一の」の意味を表す接頭語 mon(o)- と、「色、色彩、色素」を表す接尾語 -chrome により合成された monochrome
モノクロームという語は、単色、モノクロームの意となり、単彩画や単色画にも用いられる言葉です。写真の場合は、カラー写真に対するものとして、黒白写真やモノクロ写真と呼ばれています。針穴写真は、長時間露光という特徴のために、普通のカラー写真のような発色を得ることが難しいですが、カラー写真も撮ることができます。ところで、カラーの場合は、設備面で自家現像が難しいという理由から、ほとんどの場合は、ラボに依頼する形をとります。その一方で、モノクロ写真の場合は,
手間暇さえいとわなければ、フィルム現像もプリント制作も比較的手軽な設備でできるので、自分の希望通りの仕上がりを、ローコストで追求することが可能です。
私がモノクロ写真にこだわるのは、そのような理由に加えて、色という要素が排除された光と影だけが織りなす映像を、心底美しいと感じるからです。私がカラー写真よりもマニエール・ノワールのような銅版画のほうにより親近感を覚えるのはそのためです。
"Monochrome" photography is also called "black and white"
photography. Pinhole Photography is available in color although it is difficult
to obtain normal colors because of a longtime exposure of picture taking.
By the way for color development and printing, it is rather difficult to
do domestically and we should almost ask the labs by reason of the facilities.
On the other hand, black and white photography is easy to develop and print
with relatively simple facilities and possible to pursuit the quality you
want in a low cost on condition that you don't spare time nor labor.
I am particular about monochrome, in addition to these reasons, because
I find really beautiful the images formed only by light and shadow eliminating
color elements. This is why I feel close rather to "Manière
Noire" etching than to color photography.
La photographie "monochrome" s'appelle aussi la photographie
en "noir et blanc". Le sténopé peut se faire en
couleur bien qu'il soit difficile d'obtenir des couleurs normales à
cause du temps de pose prolongé de la prise de vue. Pour le developpement
et le tirage en couleur, par ailleurs, il est plutôt difficile à
faire à la maison et on devrait quasiment demander au labo pour
une raison d'équipement. Par contre la photographie en noir et blanc
est assez facile de développer et tirer par un moyen relativement
simple et capable de poursuivre la qualité qu'on veut avec un bas
coût à condition qu'on n'épargne ni son temps ni son
travail.
A en adjouter, je tiens au monochrome parce que je trouve vraiment belles
les images formées uniquement par l'ombre et la lumière excluant
des éléments de couleur. C'est pourquoi je me sens proche
plutôt de la gravure "manière noire" que la photographie
en couleur.
