< What is a Visa? >
[Visa]
A visa is a recommendation for entering Japan by a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad and is divided into 7 categories according to the purpose of visit. Generally, a visa is stamped on a passport and a purpose of visit and a period of stay are printed on it. The validity of Japanese visa is 3 months (12 months in case of multiple visa) from the date of issue.
You may choose the way of visa application as follows.
1. To apply directly to a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad.
In general, a visa for short stay (tourist visa) is issued on the spot in a short term. On the other hand, as the application for a visa for long stay (working visa, etc.) is transferred to Japan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice) to examine, it takes a time to obtain.
2. To apply for and obtain a Certificate of Eligibility prior to visa application.
When an application is made with a certificate of eligibility, a visa will be issued quicker. As to details, please refer to "Certificate of Eligibility".
[Visa and Landing Permission]
A visa is only one of requirements for landing and as a result of the immigration inspection, there may be the case that the landing is not permitted. The visa issuance does not always mean the landing permission.
Except for a multiple visa, a visa becomes invalid when the landing permission is stamped on a passport ("USED" is stamped on a visa). A status of residence and a period of stay are printed on a landing permission.
[Visa Exemption]
You are exempt from visa requirements and can enter Japan without a visa, IF YOU ARE;
1. A national of the country concluding a reciprocal visa exemption agreement with Japan
As of April 1, 2002, Japan has concluded an agreement with 63 countries and their nationals can stay in Japan for a short period of sightseeing, visiting relatives, business meetings, etc. without a visa.
However, this agreement is not applicable when you intend to work in Japan. You shall obtain a visa corresponding to the purpose of your visit.
2. A foreign resident having a re-entry permission
When you have obtained a re-entry permission prior to leaving Japan, you can enter Japan without a visa, as long as a re-entry permission is valid. 3. A foreign passenger on board a vessel or airplane having a special permission for landing such as transit visa, etc.
When you stay in Japan temporarily and then leave for other country, you do not need a visa.
Your inquiry will be always welcome;
