[Permission for Residence]
In order to obtain a permission, you shall fulfill both of the following requirements.
1. Your activity to be engaged in Japan shall come under one of
activities authorized for each status of residence.
2. You shall fulfill the Landing Examination Criteria (Criteria of
Ministry of Justice Ordinance) applicable to some of status of
residence such as those for working, receiving an education, etc.

A status of residence is divided into 27 categories according to the activities to be engaged in Japan as follows.
16 categories for Working
6 categories for Non-working
1 category of Working or Non-working to be judged individually
4 categories of Civil Status and Position (no limitation on
activities)
