< What is an Extension of Period of Stay? >
[Permission to Extend a Period of Stay]
You are permitted to stay in Japan only within the period of stay determined at the time of landing. If you intend to remain in Japan under the same status of residence beyond your authorized period of stay, you shall apply for and obtain a permission. Please make sure that the application for extension does not always mean that it will be approved.
The application shall be made by the date of expiration of the present period of stay and may be accepted from about 2 months prior to that date. Please make sure that if the application is delayed for even a day, you may be considered as an illegal resident.
[Remaining in Japan without an Extension (Over-stay)]
When you remain in Japan beyond your authorized period of stay without an extension, you shall be subject to punishment and deportation. When deported, you can not enter Japan for 5 years from the date of deportation.
[Extension of a status of residence "Temporary Visitor"]
Except for a special case, the extension is not permitted. When there are circumstances on humanity or reasonable grounds to extend, the application might be approved.
