[Permission for Permanent Residence]
When you intend to remain in Japan permanently, you shall apply for and obtain a permission. This permission is one of those for changing a status of residence and therefore, the application can be made only by a foreigner staying in Japan presently. Please make sure that the application does not always mean that it will be approved.
A status of residence "Permanent Resident" will never be assigned to a foreigner at the time of landing examination.
[Conditions for Permission]
1. Conditions for applicant
1) You are generally required to have stayed in Japan continuously (not in total) for more than 10 years.
When you leave Japan temporarily with a re-entry permission, your stay after returning to Japan will be considered as being continued.
2) You are required to have the longest period of stay (max. 3 years) granted to your status of residence.
3) The required period of residence is shortened exceptionally, IF YOU ARE;
- A college student to be employed in Japan after graduation.
To have stayed in Japan continuously for more than 5 years after obtaining a permission for changing status of residence "College Student" to that for working.
- A spouse of Japanese national or permanent resident
To have stayed in Japan continuously for more than 3 years after marriage or when getting married abroad, more than 3 years after marriage and to have stayed in Japan continuously for more than 1 year.
- A child or a specially adopted son of Japanese national or permanent resident
To have stayed in Japan continuously for more than 1 year.
- A person having a status of residence "Long Term Resident"
To have stayed in Japan continuously for more than 5 years after obtaining such status of residence.
2. Conditions for permission
1) To be of good conduct
When you violate a traffic regulations, commit a crime, do not pay a tax, etc., you may not be permitted.
2) To have sufficient assets or ability to make an independent living.
The examination of application may take more than 6 months and therefore, if the present period of stay expires during this period, you shall apply for an extension of period of stay first. Even if the application for permanent residence is being made, the expiration of period of stay means that you are an illegal resident.
Even if the application is not permitted, you will never lose your present status of residence.
