< What is a Naturalization? >
[Permission for a Naturalization]
When you intend to be naturalized, you may apply for permission of the Minister of Justice and acquire a Japanese nationality.
[Conditions for Application]
To apply for a naturalization, you shall fulfill the following conditions.
1. Period of residence
To have stayed in Japan continuously for more than 5 years.
2. Ability
To be over the age of 20 years and have a legal ability by the law of your native country.
3. Behavior and conduct
To be of good behavior and conduct.
4. Independent living
To have sufficient assets or ability to make an independent living.
5. Prevention of multi-nationality
To have no nationality or lose your previous nationality.
6. Ability of Japanese language
To have a fundamental ability to read, write and speak Japanese.
[Procedures for Application]
1. Applicant
If you are over the age of 15 years, you shall appear in person and make an application. If not, a legal proxy such as parents, etc. shall make an application.
2. Place of application
The application shall be submitted to the Regional Legal Affairs Bureau of the city where you are living (not the Regional Immigration Bureau).
3. Consultation prior to the application
You may have an individual consultation and will be advised of the documents required for the application.
[Simplified Naturalization]
If you have a kinship with Japanese nationals such as a spouse or a child of Japanese, a child adopted by Japanese nationals, or have renounced Japanese nationality, conditions for application are mitigated or exempted.
