< What is an Alien Registration? >
[Alien Registration]
In order to clarify the matters regarding to the residence and status, foreigners staying in Japan for more than a certain period of time are required to register at the municipal office of the city where they are living.
However, you are exempted from the registration, IF YOU ARE;
1. A holder of status of residence "Diplomat" or "Official"
2. A member and civilian employee of U.S. armed forces and their dependent
3. A person who will leave Japan within 90 days from the date of landing.
4. A person who was born in Japan or has renounced Japanese nationality and will leave Japan within 60 days from the date of birth or renouncement.
[Initial Registration]
The initial registration is mandatory, IF YOU ARE;
1. A person who will stay in Japan for more than 90 days.
You are required to apply for your registration within 90 days from the date of landing.
2. A person who was born in Japan or has renounced Japanese nationality and will stay in Japan for more than 60 days.
You are required to apply for your registration within 60 days from the date of birth or renouncement.
3. An illegal resident
If you have entered Japan illegally, you must register and if you stay in Japan beyond your period of stay (over-stay), you may register.
The number of items to be registered is generally 20 such as name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, status of residence, etc.
When the registration is completed, a certificate of alien registration will be issued in about 2 weeks. If you are older than 16 years, you shall always carry this certificate with you, if not, you will be subject to punishment.
[Registration of Changes in Registered Items]
When you have changed any one of the registered items, you are required to apply for the registration as follows.
1. Changes in name, nationality, place of residence, occupation, status of residence, period of stay, name and location of employment
You are required to apply for the registration within 14 days, if not, you are subject to punishment.
When changing name and nationality, you are also required to apply for the exchange issuance as the new certificate will be issued.
2. Changes in other items
You may apply for the registration at your first available opportunity such as applying for re-issuance, exchange issuance, registration of changes described in 1 above, renewal, etc.
[Re-issuance]
When you have lost your registration certificate due to theft, misplacement or destruction, you are required to apply for the re-issuance within 14 days, if not, you shall be subject to punishment.
[Exchange Issuance]
When a registration certificate is damaged or spoiled, you may apply for a new certificate.
